Happy Halloween!

How cute is that?! Pumpkin carving is one halloween tradition we can't do without. It's serious business when we get down to gutting, designing, and carving out these works of art.

That would be a jigsaw that Brent is using to carve out the pumpkin's face. I wasn't joking when I said it was serious business around here.

Benson Gristmill Pumpkin Walk
The Benson Gristmill is a historical monument of pioneer heritage here in Tooele Valley. We often attend communtiy events hosted here. In the fall they have an annual pumpkin walk where different elementary school classes or other community groups are invited to display pumpkins that depict the theme. This year's theme was "Dreaming of the Future". Matthew's class was invited to create pumpkins that characterized what they wanted to be when they grow up. Matthew said he wanted to be an inventor. Here's his creation, "Mr. Inventor":
While we were there we happened upon something we hadn't seen before....These bikers had this candy cannon.

Here are Brent and the kids waiting to see what's going to happen.....

For a few of the shoots we were the only ones there. It didn't take long for the rest of the crowd to catch on. Check this out!

Andrew made friends with one of the biker's puppy....

They even shared candy. Eewwwww!

Megan who just popped a sour power candy in her mouth.
Happy times!

Halloween Hassle
In twelve years of dressing kids up for Halloween, I've never had one be so contrary to dressing up as Andrew has been. I first pulled out the costume bin from the basement the first Sunday in September. (I wanted to get started early since I had five costumes to come up with.) All the kids enjoyed our visit with the ghost from Halloween past, EXCEPT for Andrew. He wanted NO part in trying on a costume.

(Remember Mom when you sent me to preschool in this dorky chicken costume and all my friends were dressed up so cool like Power Rangers and Transformers and Superman...)

Up until about a week ago, I'd been trying to get Andrew interested in a costume. Every time I would hold one up to test his interest, he would run away, or scream if I attempted to put it on him. I decided he would be the Halloween grinch this year and consider myself lucky if I could just get him to wear orange and black.
And then....I discovered my BFF, Heather, had a Buzz lightyear costume. Andrew loves Buzz. He flies Buzz around the house shouting "To bahdee-bahdee-bahdee and beyond!" I was sure he'd go for Buzz. When I held it up, he lowered his head, gave me a scowl, and ran off. Jeremy, however, took interest in the costume. I let him try it on. It fit perfectly, and he loved it. We had already bought Jeremy a cowboy costume, but at this point it wasn’t too late for him to change his mind. Heather suggested I let Andrew be the cowboy. She figured I could dress him up in "cowboy things" and he might not notice he was getting dressed up. Good idea.
We went into town looking for boots and a western shirt at DI for Andrew. Back at home, much later in the afternoon, Andrew discovered Buzz casually deposited on the couch. He looked at the costume with wonder, as if he'd never seen anything quite so awesome. He wanted to put the Buzz costume on.......Yay. Sort of. Once he had it on, he would not take it off. He fell asleep in it.

And then later, Jeremy stepped in. "No Andrew. I'm going to be Buzz for Christmas!" That was just trouble and funny mixed together. I convinced Jeremy to try on his cowboy costume. He wasn't all that impressed anymore, until we brought out the gun holster with real live cap guns. And then Andrew wanted the guns. He wouldn't take off the Buzz costume, but he wanted the guns. Brent suggested I find a laser gun for Andrew and then maybe that would solve the situation. I thought maybe they could both be cowboys.... maybe if I bought another gun and holster set Andrew would be good to be a cowboy after all. So off to Walmart I went, Andrew in tote. Not interested in anything. I went ahead and bought a $5 laser gun that made noises and lit up.
Back home, boys to bed, I hoped to resolve the issue in the morning. The next morning I heard Jeremy announcing to Andrew that he (Jeremy) was going to be Buzz and that Andrew was going to be Woody. The laser gun I bought only enticed Jeremy more to the Buzz costume and nobody wanted to be Woody. Oh boy!
Jeremy tried his hardest to convince Andrew why Woody was better than Buzz. When he finally realized he wasn’t getting anywhere, he reluctantly agreed to be Woody. As I thanked him for being such a good sport, he sadly confessed that Buzz was so much cooler than Woody because “Buzz can fly and Woody can’t”. And with that, all I could hear was Tom Hanks’ voice running through my head, “You can’t fly! You’re a TOY!”

Weekend Report

House by Frigidaire
It got a little chilly around here this past weekend. Friday night outside temperatures dropped to 31 degrees. We did what any normal American family would do and turned on the heat. Except the heat wouldn't kick on. In the middle of the night I'm asking Brent why the heat won't go on. Says he doesn't know and would figure it out in the morning. Meanwhile, inside temperatures dropped to 61 degrees.
Come 8:30 in the morning I suddenly remembered we were supposed to be at the church, as I had signed our family up for cleaning. They always pass the sign up sheet around when you're sitting there in your meetings, feeling the Spirit so strong, and you're thinking "Yeah, let's get up early on the only morning we can sleep in and do service!" And then Saturday morning rolls around and you're wondering at what point was this a good idea? On this particularly cold morning my kids were all jumping out of their warm beds saying "Yay! We get to go to the church for service this morning!" LIES. After dragging everyone out of bed, throwing sweats on, and denying all the chirping birds breakfast, we arrived at the church 20 minutes late, only to find out they didn't need us.
So we came back to our frigid house and Brent investigated the lack of heat problem. It appears the heat did not kick on because there was no ventilation. Somebody (or several somebodies) packed the vent with dirt. Here he is remedying the problem and lecturing the culprits.

A Pouring out of blessings
Once upon a summer, specifically the summer of 2006, we took a family vacation to California. En route along the I-15, our van engine seized in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Grandpa and Grandma Ririe came to rescue us around midnight. Fast forward to the engine replaced with the price tag of a mere $7,841 and some odd change.
Later that year Brent's brother, Taylor, alerted us to a class action suit against Toyota for oil gel problems. One particular symptom was excessive oil consumption. After sending in the requested paperwork, Toyota denied our claim, stating there was not sufficient evidence that the engine seized as a result of oil gel problems. Enclosed in the letter of denial was an address of a court appointed third party evaluator that we could contact if we felt we wanted to further pursue the claim. So we did. That was over a year ago.
Saturday night we picked up the mail and found a glorious letter. It was from the third party evaluator ruling Toyota to reverse their decision to deny our claim, and ordering them to reimburse us THE FULL AMOUNT !
I wish I can say that we could now afford that trip down to the Bahamas...or tell all of you to send us your Christmas lists (my Dad's idea:)...but the Federal Government who partially subsidized Brent's education is giving us that arms folded, foot tapping glare.
How absolutely grateful we are to receive this amazing blessing in such a time of extreme need. Yet another testimony that Malachi speaks the truth. "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." (Malachi 3:10)

The more things change...
July marked three years since we moved out west here to Stansbury Park. This past Sunday marked our second ward boundary realignment due to abounding growth in the area. It was reported that our ward totaled more than 650 members (95% probably under the age of 3). We are now members of a new ward called Ponderosa Ward that was created from two existing wards.
My BFF :), Heather Miller, and I are now in the same ward. How do I even know Heather? She and Brent worked at Cloth World together a very, very, very long time ago when Brent and I first started dating. Crazy, after 18 years we would end up in the same state, same city, and now even same ward. God bless Jeremy and Cameron's primary teacher, as they will be in the same primary class now.
And just when we were looking forward to that coveted 11:00 am time block after paying our dues and attending the 9:00 am time block for nearly a full year...we are getting kicked to the 1:00 pm time block, only to start the 9:00 am time block all over again in January. I think the same thing happened at the last ward divsion.
Being that we are in a newly created ward, we are expecting phone calls from the bishopric very soon to extend to us our new callings. Brent said not to answer the phone for a few days. J/K

So that concludes our weekend report. Be sure to join us again for updated news and information.

Jeremy Appleseed

I'd have to say that apples are Jeremy's most favorite food. He is practically an apple connoisseur. If it was the last thing on earth to eat, he would not feel the least bit deprived.
Jeremy had determined that he knew how to cut his own apples. After one too many times of retrieving a knife to cut his apple "all by myself", I held up a knife and repeated several times to Jeremy, "Jeremy, sharp knives, no...Jeremy, sharp knives, no" This I did until I felt it had sufficiently sunk in.
The next day Jeremy, again, was getting a knife to cut his apple. I waited to see if my lesson had stuck. And then I heard him chant, "Jeremy, sharp knives, yes...Jeremy, sharp knives, yes."

I decided it would be well worth $5 to invest in an apple cutter.

We had been thoroughly enjoying this new addition to our family, when I thought how fun it would be to have caramel dip with apples for our family home evening treat this past week. Yep. You guessed it. Now the naked apples aren't enough. Here's Jeremy Appleseed in his Johnny Appleseed hat enjoying his caramel dipped apple slices.

Insomnia

So you might notice that I'm blogging in the middle of the night. Natalie woke up crying, which thankfully is rare these days. When I came back to bed, Matthew had slipped in. I sent him back to his bed...he got disoriented and fell down the stairs. OUCH! He seems to be OK. Got Natalie back to sleep, came downstairs for a drink of water and realized Matthew's fall jolted me a little more awake than I wanted to be. So I thought I'd blog really quick. Except it didn't end up being really quick...since I was so far behind. Well, I'm going to bed now, very happy that it's late start Monday.

Now that we're in the light of day I can see the damage. Poor guy!

Lucky Number Seven

She is the seventh member of our family and is now seven months old. Slow down already! Natalie has mastered sitting up, and really enjoys playing with her toys. I can't believe we still have these rings. Santa left them for Megan on her first Christmas.

I can now set her in the middle of the playroom with her brothers and she will contentedly play for quite a while. When I check on her, she usually ends up like this on her tummy and is restocked with spidermans and trucks. I really need to invest in more pink like toys.

We advanced her diet to Gerber stage one foods and other things that she's probably too young to have. If you're eating in front of her, she gives you that "Why aren't you sharing?" look with those sad puppy dog eyes.
She's developed her own way of communicating her displeasure. She crinkles her nose and makes a snorty noise several times really fast. Don't you wish they would always stay so cute when your kids are not happy with you? What a joy she is to all of us, and how lucky we are to have this youngest member of our family.

Heart Attack

Our realator called the other day asking permission to put signs up to draw more attention to our house. What could it hurt?I was away at the grocery store when she came. When I pulled up to my house, this is what I saw:

Not only did my yard have a heart attack, so did I (nearly). I asked Brent to remove those cheesy signs immediately (after I took the pictures, of course!). Brent's opinion was that he was sure it was a bright idea, just wasn't sure how bright the realator was.

Hugs and Tugs

Natalie is always so excited to see Megan walk in the door from school. Her whole face lights up when she sees her big sister. It's big tight hugs and full grabbing tugs as these two greet each other at the end of school day.
Happy Girls!

Oh yeah-my birthday...

Our home teachers and their families came over for a BBQ. One of the wives made me my own special birthday cake.

Jeremy was so excited to light the candles, he kept following me around, asking me how old I wanted to be. Hmmm....good question. Matthew informed me that they used every last candle we had. Brent added that the number 2 had to represent two candles or there wouldn't have been enough. It took FOREVER to light them all, not only because there was so many, but because all the little ones kept blowing them out before they were done.

I was trying to hold Natalie back so she wouldn't get burned. Poor thing has such a worried look on her face! Don't worry baby girl, they accumulate one candle at a time, and you still have half a year before you get your first one.

My Birthday Bouquet
I am always greeted by something this beautiful every year. I remember when Brent first bought me this vase several years ago. He cut a flower out of construction paper with the words, "I hope your life and this vase are always filled with something beautiful. " :) How prophetic!
